How to Get Netflix on Your Cable Box: Xfinity, Spectrum, Fios and Fire Stick

You can watch Netflix on your cable box without buying a streaming stick, as long as your provider’s box supports the app. Xfinity X1 and Flex, and select Spectrum and Verizon Fios boxes, all run Netflix. You open it from the Apps menu or a special channel, then sign in with your Netflix account.

Below are the exact steps for each provider, plus Amazon Fire Stick, and what to do when Netflix will not load. If you use DISH instead, see our guide to watching Netflix on a DISH receiver.

Netflix on cable box setup with Verizon Fios TV

Before You Start

  • You need your own Netflix plan, or one included in your provider bundle.
  • Keep your Netflix email and password handy.
  • Check that your box is connected to the internet. Netflix streams over your home internet, not the TV signal.

Netflix on Xfinity X1 and Flex

On Xfinity, say “Netflix” into the Voice Remote, or open it from the Apps section. Then choose Sign In.

  1. Press the Xfinity button on your remote.
  2. Go to Apps.
  3. Select Netflix and press OK.
  4. Choose Sign In and enter your Netflix details.

With a Voice Remote, simply say “Netflix” to jump straight to the app.

Netflix on Spectrum

Netflix runs on select Spectrum boxes, including the newer Xumo Stream Box. Open it from Menu, then Apps, or tune to channel 1002 or 2001.

  1. Press Menu on your remote.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Find Netflix and press OK.
  4. Choose Sign In and enter your details.

If Netflix does not appear on your Spectrum box, your model may not support it. In that case, ask Spectrum about an upgrade, or use a streaming stick instead.

Netflix on Verizon Fios

On select Fios boxes, tune to channel 838 and press OK to open Netflix on your cable box.

You can also find Netflix in the Apps menu, or press Menu and open On Demand, then Netflix. Then choose Sign In. Older Fios boxes may not have the app, so check with Verizon if it is missing.

Netflix on Amazon Fire Stick

Most Fire Sticks come with Netflix ready to use. If yours does not, install it in a minute:

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Find, then Search.
  2. Type Netflix and select the app.
  3. Choose Get or Download.
  4. Open Netflix and sign in.

Netflix Not Working on Your Cable Box or Fire Stick?

Most Netflix problems on these boxes clear with a restart, a fresh sign in, or a check of your internet. Try these in order.

  1. Restart the box. Unplug it for one minute, then plug it back in and wait for it to load.
  2. Sign out and back in. Inside Netflix, open Get Help or Settings and choose Sign Out. Then sign in again.
  3. Check your internet. Open another app or a website on the same network. If that fails too, restart your router.
  4. Check Netflix itself. Netflix shows any outage on its Help Center, so check there before changing settings.

Extra fixes on Fire Stick

On a Fire Stick, open Settings, then Applications, then Manage Installed Applications, then Netflix. First choose Force Stop, then Clear cache, and open Netflix again. If it still fails, uninstall Netflix and install it again.

Also, if you see a black screen, check the HDMI cable and make sure the TV is on the right HDMI input. Our Fire Stick setup and fixes guide covers this in more detail, and our guide to a Fire Stick not connecting to Wi Fi helps when the stick drops off your network.

Common Questions

Do I need a separate Netflix plan to use it on my cable box?

Usually yes. Your cable box only runs the app. However, some providers include Netflix in certain bundles, so check your bill or plan first.

Why is there no Netflix app on my cable box?

Older boxes may not support it. Ask your provider whether a newer box is available, or use a streaming stick on a spare HDMI port.

Can I watch Netflix offline?

Not on a cable box. You can, however, download titles on a phone or tablet. See our guide to downloading Netflix movies to watch offline.
