Verizon Fios vs Spectrum Internet (2026): Prices, Speeds and Which Is Better

In the Verizon Fios vs Spectrum internet choice, Fios is the better connection and Spectrum is usually the cheaper first year. Fios runs on 100% fiber, so uploads match downloads, and Verizon locks your price for 3 to 5 years. Spectrum is cable, with much slower uploads, but its first year costs less and it reaches far more homes.

Prices below are what each company listed in October 2026. They change by address and by month, so always check yours before you order.

Verizon Fios vs Spectrum: The Short Answer

Pick Verizon Fios if it reaches your address and you work from home, upload files, game or stream on many screens. Pick Spectrum if Fios is not available, or you want the lowest price for the first 12 months and can live with slower uploads.

Most homes cannot choose. Fios covers parts of 8 states and Washington, DC, mostly in the Northeast. Spectrum covers parts of about 45 states. The two only meet in a few places, such as New York City and parts of New York state.

Verizon’s prices need Auto Pay and paper free billing. Spectrum’s prices are 12 month offers for new customers. After that year, the bill goes up to Spectrum’s standard rate for your area.

Can you compare Spectrum and Verizon internet plans for 1Gbps?

Yes. At the gig level, Spectrum Gig costs $60 a month for the first year and Fios 1 Gig costs $90. Spectrum includes its Advanced WiFi router on Gig. Fios 1 Gig includes the router and Whole Home Wi-Fi.

The real gap is upload speed. Fios 1 Gig averages 750 to 880 Mbps up on a wired connection, according to Verizon. Spectrum Gig uploads are far lower on most of its network today.

Spectrum vs Fios Speed: Download and Upload

Fios is faster where it counts most for busy homes, because fiber gives you upload speeds close to your download speeds. Spectrum’s downloads are similar on paper, but its cable uploads are a small fraction of that on most plans.

Download speed matters for streaming and web pages. Upload speed matters when you send things out. That includes video calls, cloud backups, posting videos and online gaming.

Spectrum is upgrading its cable network. Compare Internet reported in March 2026 that the first upgraded areas can reach up to 1 Gbps upload. Most Spectrum homes do not have that yet. Ask Spectrum which upload speed your address gets before you sign up.

Fiber also tends to hold steady in the evening, when everyone on your street is online. Cable shares capacity across a neighbourhood, so speeds can dip at busy times.

Which Is Cheaper: Spectrum or Verizon Fios?

Spectrum is cheaper for the first year at almost every speed. Take the gig plans as an example:

  • Spectrum Gig, year one: $60 a month, about $720 for the year.
  • Fios 1 Gig, year one: $90 a month, about $1,080 for the year, plus a $99 setup fee unless you have Verizon mobile.

From year two, the picture changes. Your Fios base price stays fixed for 5 years on 1 Gig. Spectrum’s promo ends after 12 months, and the plans page does not show the price you move to. Ask for that number in writing before you order.

Keep in mind the guarantee only covers the base monthly rate. Verizon says it does not cover equipment charges, discounts or extras.

Fees, Equipment and Contracts

Verizon Fios fees:

  • Setup: a $99 professional setup fee may apply. Verizon waives it for customers who add Fios to a Verizon mobile plan.
  • Router: included on every plan. Higher plans add Whole Home Wi-Fi extenders.
  • Contract: none on the standard plans.
  • Return equipment: if you cancel, Verizon asks you to return the router within 30 days to avoid a charge.

Spectrum fees:

  • Wi-Fi: Advanced WiFi costs $10 a month on the 100 and 500 Mbps plans. It is included on Gig and 2 Gig.
  • Modem: included.
  • Contract and data caps: Spectrum says it has no contracts and no data caps.
  • Install: self install or professional install fees can apply, so check the total at checkout.

Both bundles add mobile perks. Spectrum’s plans page lists a free Spectrum Mobile line for a year. Verizon gives Mobile and Home customers perks such as setup fee waivers and backup internet over cellular.

Where Each Provider Is Available

Verizon Fios is sold in Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington, DC. Coverage inside each state is patchy, so a neighbour may have it while you do not.

Two big deals in 2026 changed both maps:

  • Verizon bought Frontier. Verizon completed the deal in January 2026. Those fiber areas now run as “Frontier, a Verizon Company”, not under the Fios name.
  • Charter bought Cox. Charter, the company behind Spectrum, closed the deal in August 2026. Cox areas began moving to the Spectrum brand from mid September. Read more in our guide to Cox becoming Spectrum.

Fios vs Spectrum in NYC

New York City is one of the few places where both are common. Many apartment buildings are wired for one but not the other, so start by asking your building or entering your full address, including the unit number, on both sites.

If your building has both, Fios is the stronger pick for working from home, thanks to its upload speeds. Spectrum makes sense if your budget is tight for the next year, or if Fios has not wired your building yet.

What Happened to Time Warner Cable?

Time Warner Cable no longer exists as a brand. Charter bought it in 2016 and renamed its service Spectrum. So if you see an old “Fios vs Time Warner” comparison, read it as Fios vs Spectrum, and expect its prices to be years out of date.

Verizon Fios vs Spectrum TV

Both still sell cable TV. Fios TV comes in three main tiers, from Your Fios TV with 125+ channels up to The Most Fios TV with 425+ channels. Spectrum’s main tier is TV Select Signature with 150+ channels, and Spectrum includes several streaming apps with it at no extra cost.

Spectrum adds a monthly Broadcast TV fee for local channels, so the bill is higher than the plan price. Verizon also adds fees, so ask both for the full monthly total. To use either service with a streaming box, see our guide to setting up Netflix on Spectrum and Verizon Fios.

Is Verizon Fios Better Than Spectrum?

For most people who can get both, yes. Fios gives faster uploads, a steadier evening connection and a price that stays the same for years. Spectrum wins on first year cost and much wider coverage.

Choose Fios if you:

  • Work from home or take a lot of video calls.
  • Back up photos and files to the cloud.
  • Want to know your price for the next 3 to 5 years.
  • Already pay for Verizon mobile, so setup is free.

Choose Spectrum if you:

  • Cannot get Fios at your address.
  • Mostly stream and browse, and rarely upload.
  • Want the lowest bill for the first 12 months.
  • Want a free mobile line for a year.

Common Questions

Is Fios faster than Spectrum?

For uploads, yes, by a wide margin on most addresses. For downloads, the plans are similar at each tier, but fiber usually holds its speed better at busy times.

Does Spectrum have data caps?

No. Spectrum says its internet plans have no data caps. Fios does not cap data either.

Is Spectrum or Fios more reliable?

Fiber is usually more reliable, because it is less affected by neighbourhood traffic and electrical interference. Outages still happen on both. If yours drops, see how to fix a Verizon Fios outage or check if Spectrum is down.

Can I switch from Spectrum to Fios?

Yes, if Fios serves your address. Book the Fios install first and cancel Spectrum after it works, so you are never offline. Spectrum has no contract, so there is no fee to leave.

The Bottom Line on Fios vs Spectrum Internet

In the Verizon Fios vs Spectrum internet match, Fios wins on speed, uploads and long term price, while Spectrum wins on first year cost and coverage. Enter your full address on both sites, compare the price after any promo, and pick Fios if it is there and fits your budget.
