Here is my pick of some excellent award-winning, genre-changing, thought-provoking movies streaming right now on Netflix.
May be because of the recent lockdown as a result of covid19 or you are stuck indoors and searching for some good movie to watch? There are lots of movies to watch on Netflix. However, there are even secret codes to explore the different genres – from new movies to comedies and dramas, historical tales to action thrillers, kids’ movies to Oscar-winning pictures.
May be you’re overwhelmed by the sheer amount of sections, unable to stop the endless, fruitless scroll through options and not having any idea of which film to pick. Well, don’t despair – we’ve whittled down the huge list for your viewing satisfaction, from the pretty low-commitment Superbad to the rather more heavy-going The Irishman, and everything in between.
Therefore to watch more movies, there are lots of selection to choose from. Below are best movies to watch on Netflix this month.
Money heist
Money heist is a criminal mastermind who goes by the name “The Professor” and has a plan to pull off the biggest heist in recorded history – he wants to print billions of euros in the Royal Mint of Spain. To aid him in carrying out his ambitious plan, he recruits eight people with different skills. This is actually the best movie of 2020 as it is the most streamed movie this month
Roma (2018)
This movie is about a maid working for an upper-middle class family in Mexico City in the 1970s is visually stunning, deeply moving and a must watch movie on Netflix. In this movie we follow housekeeper Cleo as she, and her family, face societal and political issues. However been seen as one of the best movies then in 2018 and still among the ranking films of 2020 – also applauded by critics globally – it won award for two Golden Globes, for best director and best foreign language film.
Extraction (2020)
It’s tense, well paced, a solid star vehicle for Hemsworth. I personally recommend this movie as I watched and re-watched it as it contains just the right amount of genuinely exciting action you can imagine.
This trending movie is Netflix’s newly released action movie that has gone globally that a second instalment is already in the works. From first-time feature director Sam Hargrave, with Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and also Antony Russo serving as executive producers (and Joe also having written the script), Extraction stars Thor’s Chris Hemsworth and tells the story of black-market mercenary Tyler Rake, who took the contract to go to Bangladesh to rescue the kidnapped son of a prisoned drug lord.
Marriage Story (2019)
Although this is not an action movie, it is about a relationship falling apart and all the emotions that come with that. This family movie was acted by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver who played the couple and decided to get divorced in this award-winning masterpiece from writer/director Noah Baumbach and also put in some of the best performances of their career, which really deserved more award attention than they got.
The last kingdom
This is a movie is all about the desire of Alfred king of Wessex to unite England. He however is not doing it on his own, as he has the protection of a den referred to a den slayer by other dens. Ultred who wanted to be happy and to live with his children in his fathers home. I recommend you watch this movie as it will keep you going with its actions and engagement.
Okja (2017)
This is an emotional movie, its a heartwarming tale from Bong Joon-Ho.
Okja is a kind of odd story following a girl and her very close friend, a huge, weird animal called Okja. Soon the pair find themselves battling the CEO (Tilda Swinton) of a huge company who wants to take Okja away. Moreover, there’s a clear agenda underlying the story, animal activism is a strain throughout, and the film doesn’t shy away from that. Joon-Ho’s wonderfully refreshing odd style blends with slight preachy notes, but it comes together to give you a beautiful film.
The Irishman (2019)
This is a passion project long in the making, Netflix’s The Irishman sees director Martin Scorsese reunited with Robert De Niro for their ninth collaboration. However, the gangster biopic centres on Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (De Niro), who remembers his involvement in the disappearance of his longtime friend Jimmy Hoffa (played by Al Pacino). Till its release; from its CGI de-aging used on De Niro, Pacino and Joe Pesci, to the sheer unwieldy length of this epic (it’s a whopping 3 hours 30 minutes.
Bad boys for life
Bad boys for life is an American action comedy film directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and written by Chris Bremner, Peter Craig and Joe Carnahan. In this movie, the wife and son of a Mexican drug lord ventures into a vengeful quest to eliminate all those involved in her trial and imprisonment. Miami Detective Mike Lowrey alongside his partner Marcus Burnett sworn to stop them.
Beasts of No Nation (2015)
Idris Elba who is best known for star-making turns as a drug dealer in US TV series. The Wire and as troubled cop John Luther in the acclaimed BBC drama, however, this role is altogether more sinister. He plays the role of a commander of child soldiers in West Africa for this extraordinary Netflix film. Coming from the director of the first season of HBO’s True Detective and based on the highly acclaimed novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, the movie brings to life the gripping tale of Agu, a child soldier torn from his family to fight in the civil war of an African country.
Annihilation (2018)
Controversial and divisive, Annihilation had a rocky start in life. After much effort to find a distributor, Netflix picked up the international rights to Ex_Machina director Alex Garland’s film.
The sci-fi/horror film is based on book series The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer and also follows a group of scientists as they go into Area X, a quarantined area of the planet, where many weird things have started happening. They have no idea what they’ll find, and they’re not all being honest as to why they’re going. Natalie Portman stars and puts in a her best performance when everything around her is, well, beyond comprehension.
